Birthday party

Last Sunday I had a little birthday party for Jake. My mother wanted to make greek salad and this curried cheese dip with mango chutney, so I decided everything would be Greek or Indian. Here's what we had:

Hummus
My first time making it; it was hummus, typical and fine. I am so burned out on hummus but I figured I would make it anyways.

Baba Ghanouj
I loves me some baba; this was eggplanty and mild and delightful.

Haloumi, fried
Andrea brought this over a little while ago, and it is good and salty and it fries in its own brine.

Indian-spiced peanuts
These get better with time, but sadly weren't good until about 4 days after the party.

Maple lime drink
Some Indian specialty. Later I heard this is used as a "cleansing" drink—you basically only drink this for ten days, and eat nothing. Eek. It was tasty nonetheless!

Dal with radishes
The radishes I think made the dal taste watered down. A bit of a disappointment.

Cumin lassis
These were delighful and weird, although the first batch ended up all over the sink when the base of the blender jar loosened. That was no fun.

Cardamom shortbread cookies
Which was the explicit gift for Jake. I had made a batch a few days earlier but didn't blog about them lest he read it; then I wound up eating most of them, so I made a second batch for him.

Lemon rice pudding
This certainly pleased me! I thought the lemoniness might be a bit ick, but it was cool and refreshing. Lemon rice pudding, I'm sorry I ever doubted you. (Also this was a Greek Jewish recipe, so the Jewish dessert book has redeemed itself!)
